Athena and Kain: The True Meaning of Greek Myth
Published in Paperback by Solving Light Books (July, 2003)
Author: Robert Bowie Johnson Jr.
Average review score:

Athena and Kain: The True Meaning of Greek Myth
ATHENA and KAIN is a superb read, a thoroughly enlightening experience. This book and Mr. Johnson's previous one, ATHENA and EDEN: THE HIDDEN MEANING OF THE PARTHENON'S EAST FACADE (which I have also read), are changing the way we think about the ancient Greek world. For the first time, Greek myth has meant something to me. I always knew that it connected somehow to the broader history of the human race, but I couldn't see how. Now I do.
How quickly these books catch on in schools and among the public is anybody's guess. But I wonder: when we get to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and the media begin to speak about the Parthenon and other cultural treasures, will they understand what they see, or will they simply "ooh" and "aah" at some old Greek stuff somebody told them was important?

Athena and Kain: The True Meaning of Greek Myth
The preface to ATHENA and KAIN states that the content of the book is revolutionary, and it really is. I looked up revolutionary, and in the context used it means, "a total or radical change, as a revolution of thought." There is no other book on Greek art or myth like ATHENA and KAIN. Mr. Johnson points out that Greek sculptures appeared on public temples and other public buildings, and that mythological scenes appeared on the ancient Greeks' everyday pottery and storage jars. The average Greeks understood the meaning of their myths. Because of ATHENA and KAIN, it is now possible for us to understand them, too.

Athletic Forever: The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Plan for Lifetime Fitness
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (December, 1998)
Authors: Frank W. Jobe, Neal ElAttrache, Ted G. Rand, Neal, Md Elattrache, Frank, Md. Jobe, Orel Hershiser, and Magic Johnson
Average review score:

Excellent
Athletic Forever is an excellent health reference book because it doesn't simplify things, as so many new "fitness plans" do. Dr. Jobe & his colleagues simply present good factual information and excellent tips to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle. I found the back section of exercises particularly useful and authoritative.

A great book for all athletes and health professionals!
It was a great pleasure to read and learn from "Athletic Forever. The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Plan for Lifetime Fitness." Dr. Frank Jobe et al have taken on an interesting, contemporary subject in a most timely manner. The glowing forwards from Tommy Lasorda and Magic Johnson illustrate the tremndous respect that professional sports celebrities have for Dr. Jobe and "Athletic Forever." The text is formatted in a logical, concise manner and explores anatomy, injuries and treatment protocol without getting bogged down in needless detail. The KJ facts and closeups clearly add a new dimension to the body of knowlege regarding lifetime fitness. I especially enjoyed the insights with regards to diagnosing the cause of back pain. It is very refreshing to hear from the experts that high tech and costly imaging methods such as MRI's are in many cases unrelated to a patient's back pain. The section on stregthening and flexibility exercises is presented in a straight forward manner yet provides exceedingly valuable information in a refreshingly "low tech" appearance. Perhaps it is beyond the scope of the text, but it may have been useful to discuss 1 or 2 of the Kerlan-Jobe innovations in the field of sports medicine (For example, I would have been extremely interested in the story of Tommy John and the procedures and rehabilitation used in the "rebuilding of his pitcher's arm.") I would highly reccomend "Athletic Forever" to all athletes and health professionals!

Automotive Encyclopedia

Authors: William K. Toboldt, Larry Johnson, and W. Scott Gauthier
Average review score:

Complexity explained simply.
Goodheart and Willcox are, convincingly, experts in auto technology as well as excellent writers and illustrators. As a certified master auto and truck technician, I often refer my customers to this book for straightforward understandable explanations of the goings on under the hood. When my customer understands how a system operates, he or she is more willing to accept a diagnosis, because it makes sense and the black magic attitude is gone. The automotive encyclopedia has been available since the 70's and each addition is packed with the latest developments that the car manufactures employ to make cars more, fun, economical, and, necessarily, more complex. Goodheart and Willcox are to be congratulated on this and past editions of this wonderful reference guide. Just wonderful.

The Baby and the Badge (Harlequin Superromance, No. 860)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (September, 1999)
Author: Janice Kay Johnson
Average review score:

Fabulous Book that Everyone Should Read!
Meg Patton, single mother and the newest deputy of the Elk Springs Sheriff's Department, has finally come home. It's time for Meg to reconcile with her sisters---and past time to introduce them to her son. It might even be the right time to let herself fall in love. And even though she wasn't looking for one, she's found a likely candidate for the last part. Scott McNeil discovered an abandoned baby one night, and Meg was the officer called to investigate. She's attracted to him from the start---he's good-looking and great with the baby. So when the baby's mother is found dead, Meg must prove he's innocent, because she knows he can't be guilty. And she has to prove it---they have to prove it---for her sake, as well as his. This is a great book. It's the second book in the Patton's Daughters trilogy, but it easily stands alone. With a fresh take on the traditional woman-returning-to-home-with-her-son-that-no-one-knows-about story line, it stays fresh and engaging all the way through. If you like this book, try The Women in Blue, A Message for Abby, and one of Janice Johnson's latest books Jack Murray, Sheriff.

Another Masterpiece written by Janice Johnson!
Janice Johnson is one of my favorite autors. She makes the people in her books very realistic. This book is no exception. It has a detailed storyline, and great charecter's! I couldn't put it down untill I read the very last word. What an enthralling story!! It is a sequel to The Woman in Blue, which is another great book! The story is part of a trio of books labeled Patton's Daughter's. This was such a great book, I can not wait until I can read the third book of this series!!

Bad Moon Rising: A Colleen Fitzgerald Mystery
Published in Paperback by Naiad Pr (August, 1998)
Author: Barbara Johnson
Average review score:

Torrid and Suspenseful, Bad Moon Rising is a Must Read!
Once again, Johnson's gift of intrigue, suspense and actionheld me from the first to the last. I love the way her detaileddescriptions take me right into the action -- from the lair of an addict and her addiction, to the pornography protesters picket, and through the conservative world of DC business and glamour.

Johnson has a true talent for mixing mystery with romance, making Bad Moon Rising a wonderfully intriguing novel filled with believable characters that one ends up caring about.

Meanwhile, she also sets the stage for her next by making one wonder where Colleen is headed -- both with work and with love (will she be entranced by Jenna, or will she remain with Gillian?)

I eagerly await the next in this fabulous series!

Sizzling sequel to the hot lesbian mystery, The Beach Affair
In this suspenseful whodunit, insurance investigator Colleen Fitzgerald must delve deep into the seamy netherworld of the sex industry to find the killer beautiful porn star Amber Rose. In the heat of the investigation, Colleen discovers a dark secret in her lover Gillian's past that puts a serious strain on their relationship. Their love is further tested when Colleen shares a torrid flirtation with attorney Jenna Bolden, who is also working on the case -- but from a very different perspective.

Once again Barbara Johnson has crafted an engrossing thriller with just the right amount of romance and eroticism. Lambda Book Report was right on target when they wrote that "Bad Moon Rising is an enjoyable whodunit with a little something for everyone." Can't wait for the next one!!!!!

Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: Opening Battles
Published in Hardcover by Castle (May, 1990)
Author: Robert Underwood Johnson
Average review score:

Battles& Leaders of the Civil War: The Opening Battles
Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: The Opening Battles edited by Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel from the editorial staff of "The Century Magazine." This is volume one of a four volume set, being for the most part contributions by Union and Confederate officers, based upon "The Century War Series."

This lead off volume begins with a realistic view of Washington,D.C. on the eve of the war as the preparation for war in the North and South begins. There is an excellent account of the fall of Fort Sumter along with detailed accounts of the operations in Virginia. This book is NOT limited to just ground action, but has naval battles and conflicts along the island waterways.

What I found to be interesting aside from the eyewitness accounts, were the excellent maps and engravings. This series was originally conceived in 1883 and is refered to as source material in other writings about the Civil War.

Grant, Bauregard, Longstreet and Sherman are just a few of the stories and accounts represented in this volume as the opening battles begin and the pages of history were forever changed. Written by the men who fought these battles makes this book very interesting as we read these accounts you begin to feel all of the emotions that bring to bear on these men as war becomes a reality where death and wounding become all too common.

We read about battles in Missouri, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, South and North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas as the war heats up and the opening slavos begin.

Biggest Bargain in CW Literature
The four volumes of the famous Battles and Leaders series constitute one of the essential collections of Civil War source material and the next step up for the casual and interested reader of Civil War literature. It includes lavishly illustrated (photographs, sketches, maps) accounts of the battles by the men who fought them, the great generals, the staff officers and other observers. Nothing is omitted and the price is unbelievably low for books of this sort. The only caveat is that accounts are sometimes self-serving, especially when written by a losing general. Nonetheless things balance out and I doubt if anyone will ever regret buying the set.

Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: Tide Shifts

Battles & Leaders of the Civil War: The Tide Shifts
Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: The Tide Shifts edited by Robert Underwood Johnson nad Clarence Clough Buel from "The Century Magazine" was written and originally concieved in 1883 by the editors of the Century Company. Reading most books published today about the Civil War, you'll most likely find in the bibliography references to this series. Thus, making this one of the best source materials of eywitness accounts published to date.

One of the costliest conflits, the Civil War still ranks high among events that came out of the nineteenth-century in United States history. This is volume three of a four part series that is written by the men who fought in the battles that comprise the Civil War. Events recalld by Grant, Sherman, McClellan, Longstreet and Beauregard just to name a few are described in detail with illustrations, maps, charts, and engravings to give the reader a better understnding of what was happening.

This volume starts with Bragg's Invasion of Kentucky described by General Joseph Wheeler called The Perryville Campaign and takes us through the Knoxville and Chattanooga areas of the war. Describing everything in detail you'll feel like you're there. I found these volumes explain a lot about the different battles and give the reader excellent details.

Where else can you go to get first hand knowledge of these fought battles... making this series invaluable to the reader and student of the Civil War.If you can find this series, it will make an excellent addition to your home library... you will find yourself referencing your reading about the Civil War with these volumes... adding detail and insight only found by those who actually were there and found here chronicled for your reading.

I found this series a real help in understanding why things happened the way they had. This series gives the reader an accurate, unbiased account of the war... a compelling story about part of our nation's history.

The Ultimate Book On The American Civil War
This book is one of a series of 4 books written/ edited by Johnson and Buel in the 1880's. These books were an outgrowth of articles written by Civial War participants and published in the "Century" magazine. All of the articles are excellent and the editors' notes are superb! Whenever you read any other book on the Civil War, its bibliography will almost certainly contain Johnson and Buel's "Battles and Leaders" - their 4 books are considered, along with the "Official Records", as essential source material for any author. This book and the other 3 books in the series are GREAT! And fun to read, as well. A "Must Have" series!

Beauty Dies: A Claire Conrad/Maggie Hill Mystery

Author: Melodie Johnson Howe
Average review score:

The best mystery ever
I have both books of the outstanding trio Claire Conrad, Maggie Hill and Boulton and I can't wait to read more from them. So, Melodie Johnson Howe, keep writing.

Hilarious and provoking
I'm writing this review in case the author ever takes a look. I love this mystery, and its predecessor, THE MOTHER SHADOW. Claire, Maggie, and Boulton are lively, intriguing characters, and the sarcastic asides about gender roles are delightful. MJH, please, please write more!

Biology Laboratory Manual
Published in Spiral-bound by McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math (25 June, 2001)
Authors: Darrell S. Vodopich, Randy Moore, George B. Johnson, and Peter Raven
Average review score:

This book is like, the best!
I would like everyone to know that this book is super great. I was like so confused at first, but now everything is crystal clear. I learned that fertilization in a plant occurs in it's uterus and after gastrulation occurs the spores shoot out of the carpel and undergo a meiotic phase called the acrosomal stage. So like, if you're stumped about which bio book to get, you should totally get this one!

A superb laboratory manual.
The Biology Laboratory Manual by Guttman, Vodopich, Johnson, Raven, and Moore provides an easy to follow approach to introductory biology. It features many activities that can be completed on average between 2 and 3 hours. There are many photos and diagrams that are in full color, many pre-laboratory type questions, and a good amount of questions that are best answered during lab or after lab. This book is ideal for an advanced high school biology course or a freshman or sophomore college biology class. Unlike a fair amount of the laboratory texts out there, this one accompanies most biology books very well. Thus, the laboratory portion of class tends to blend very well with the lecture portion.
